"The number one rule is to protect your capital. And I thought — I like that."

That was Richard McInnerney's reaction the first time he heard Terry speak. A farmer grazier from Warwick in Queensland running 200 head of cattle with his wife Kaye, Richard isn't someone who likes taking big risks. And Terry's philosophy matched that instinct exactly.

Richard and Kaye came to the Blueprint with virtually no share market knowledge — a few Suncorp and Telstra shares years ago, but nothing systematic. No idea what they were doing. So before putting any real money in, they did something smart: they started with paper trading. Practising the system, testing their decisions, getting comfortable with the process — without any real financial consequence if they made a mistake.

What they found was that a complicated thing like the share market becomes manageable when you put simplistic rules around it. Follow those rules consistently, and you have something real to work with. Deviate from them — try to mix Terry's system with someone else's approach — and it stops working. "You can go and reinvent the wheel if you want to — but you'll really shoot yourself in the foot."
