Most people assume that having a finance background gives you an advantage when it comes to investing. Benson Duong would tell you it's not that simple.

Benson works in sales and lives in Sydney. He joined Freedom Trader in May 2021 with a finance background already under his belt — but made a deliberate choice to set all of it aside. "I didn't want to use any of that theory to guide my decisions. I actually wanted to go in as if I knew nothing."

Why? Because Benson understood something important from the start — good investing isn't about what you already know. It's about having the right foundation and following a system consistently. His first question wasn't "how do I maximise returns?" It was simpler: "Am I going to do better than the banks?"

The answer turned out to be yes. Benson's return on investment sits at 7% — and growing. But what he values most isn't just the number. It's the calm that comes with having a system he trusts completely. "I basically just became pretty relaxed. It was almost like it was complementing the way I live my Monday to Sunday."

Once investing becomes a habit — a natural part of your daily rhythm rather than a source of stress — the doubt disappears. The rules do the thinking. You just follow them. "There's always going to be something else on the horizon — no need to feel like you're missing out."
